Lag

Lag,

To us Vidiot’s, Lag describes the many negative effects that are the direct result of poor internet connectivity by one or more players in a multiplayer online match.

Shorter Version: Lag Sucks.

Lag has been around since the dawn of the multiplayer video game. It’s the black plague of online gaming that has limited the amount of players in a match for far too long.

It has happened to all of us. You’re in a great match; suddenly your character walks face first into the middle of a wall and starts to violently shake at an amazing velocity. Lag. The guy who was dead center of your sniper scope suddenly appears on the other side of the map. Lag. It’s like a virtual nightmare. It’s a major buzz kill.

Luckily, more and more people are signing up for high speed Internet. The Xbox Gaming console already boasts amazing graphics power, which will increase substantially when the Xbox 360 is released later this year. More processing power and high Internet bandwidth will surely lead us into online multiplayer Nirvana, right? Right.

We all hope that the dreaded case of the lag will become a thing of the past; something that us old grey haired gamers will refer to only as a phantom of days gone by. The problem is that it hasn’t happened yet, and I’m GREY! HELLO! Anytime NOW!

The truth is game designers are always pushing the limits, it’s the unfortunate downside of highly creative minds trying to give us as much cool as possible while not choking the machine. It’s been that way since the first PC game at 28.8, and I have a feeling that it will be with us way into the future. It’s part of the game. Lag. It’s the VD of IT.
